Reviews
Despite the stunning views, and the convenience this place has as its 1 hour away from Christchurch, my experience at the accommodation was disappointing. We had to carry our heavy luggage up three flights of stairs due to the lack of porters, taking us 15 minutes upon arrival. Additionally, the amenities were unsatisfactory – the fridge was dirty, both the initial kettle and its replacement were rusty, and there was also a broken light.
The hotel's shortage of staff was evident as Katherine, the sole working staff member that day, had to manage from the guest house and attend to our requests. Adding to this, the room's cleanliness left much to be desired, evident from the presence of spiderwebs around the balcony, chairs, and outside the window, alongside bird droppings on the windowsill. The windows were also dirty. It raised doubts about whether the room had been properly cleaned before our stay.
Another concerning issue was the breakfast quality. The additional charge of $20 for scrambled eggs, mushrooms, bacon, and sausages felt unjustified as the taste was below par. Even the basic, complimentary breakfast consisting of pastries, cereal, ham, milk, and juice was incredibly limited, falling short of the expectations one would have at a 5-star hotel. The lack of variety was disappointing, especially compared to other hotels offering more extensive selections.
In conclusion, this hotel failed to meet expectations in various aspects, significantly impacting the overall experience negatively. It's my hope that the management will take note of these concerns and address the issues promptly. Improvements in cleanliness, service quality, and breakfast options are imperative to ensure a more satisfying stay for future guests.
We had a really lovely night at Terrace Downs. Our room was spacious and clean, the bed was comfortable with nice linen. The view from the balcony across the golf course, Rakaia gorge and towards Mt Hutt was amazing. Dinner and dessert were wonderful, great to see local produce on the menu. The restaurant was busy with every table occupied but the service was great. Breakfast buffet was delicious with a fresh and quality selection of food. We’ll be back!
We originally booked a one bedroom villa for one night and ended up staying three.
Everything about our stay was exemplary. The staff were accommodating; friendly; efficient and professional. The villa was well appointed with every amenity we needed. The golf course is award-winning and we were fortunate to have good weather most of the time we were there which highlighted the spectacular backdrop of the mountains.
Terrace Downs is a stunning property in every way. We will definitely return.
My review is based on the golf course only, what an amazing place. You'd be forgiven for thinking you were in the European Alps, with the course winding around the natural landscape with million dollar views on every hole. My only advice is to avoid windy days. Many of the holes are straight onto the breeze, on a very windy day the course would be an absolute beast. This is a must play in New Zealand, just fantastic. Bring your clubs and your camera, you'll need both!
Overall our experience at Terrace Downs was fantastic. Great facilities, excellent service during our evening meals and the accommodation was exceptional. Golf course was fantastic and a challenge in the wind. If there was one area of improvement it would be the hire golf clubs. My husband stated the hire set used were well below par, having a mixed bag of assorted clubs with several grips really requiring to be replaced. However, noting the rest we will be back for another stay.
We were there for golf. The course was well maintained and the people were very friendly. The value for money was incredible! Any time again... Just because of the view from green 11!
Room was average. Bed clean and very comfortable. Doors/cupboards loose, balcony door didn’t lock. Checkin was subpar. Despite saying not to mention price at all in front of my friend the lady proceeded to mention the full price to pay.
The restaurant was not busy but it took over 40mins to receive our food, and then another 30 mins to get desert. Breakfast service was better. Food was good. The wifi was exceptionally slow and often cut out. For such a highly regarded facility I found our experience to be very subpar and I wouldn’t rush back at all
rooms are very old and dirty. It's better not to open the refrigerator and dishwasher at all. The restaurant service is terrible. If you have allergies or food intolerances, no one cares. For dinner and breakfast, they tried to feed me things I can't eat. The waitstaff for dinner were super polite, but the breakfast waiter was rude and intentionally delayed, despite our hurry. The breakfast itself was mediocre; you can only order decent food from the menu, and we waited for it for over 30 minutes. In the end, they brought me something I couldn't eat, with no apologies whatsoever, just rudely suggesting I go to the bar to eat, even though there was nothing left in the bar by that time - all the food plates had been cleared.
